That happened to me with my 72 Datsun 1200 (Corolla arch-rival ) even had little faint backfire occasionally
I had the timing wheel mis-positioned. While at TDC, the sensor should be pointed at the tooth which is n teeth counter-clockwise from the missing tooth.
