I managed to get another laptop with a serial port ..... but still nothing!
My brother tried for a couple of hours and gave up... but did mention that there maybe buffer chips that can blow.....Make any sense?

Still waiting for my timing light.

How do i get to the hyper terminal? ... can't find it anywhere..

Mikee,

Hyperterminal may not be installed on your version of windows- it used to be commonly available on previous versions of windows.

You can download a free trial version here:

Timing light has arrived and i've just tried it ...... No movement at all, must be running on edis default!

Just tried using Hyperterminal..................Nothing happens!
Made up a completely new lead ...........Nothing
Diferent pc....................Nothing
Took everything off my laptop and tried it all again................Nothing!

Update.... Hammer has been put away.!!

Tried doing that wiggling and tugging at wires etc and at one point i did get a response!!

:idea: loose conections to the back of the rj11 socket, Next job is to disconnect and check that out..........

Did you check for dry solder joints on the RJ11 socket?

I looked and nothing was loose so i guess it's ok.... would it hurt if i dabbed a bit more solder on the connections?

Well ...........I did it anyway! and it seems to have worked :D :D

I'll have a play tomorrow ,when the fumes have cleared, and see if i can get things running a bit smoother...!

Brilliant !!...........it's worked all day.. :D Thanks soooo much for all your help, it's been invaluable.

I was so close to trashing the thing on a number of occasions....Glad i didnt now.. :oops:

Next step.... rolling road to set things up
