Is it possible to use RaceCapture without any hardware?

Hi there,

We're a Lemons team looking to add in-car lap timing so our drivers can pace themselves, and also send messages to the driver from the pits, but we don't really need anything more than that.

Is there a way to have RaceCapture just act like a regular lap timer (using internal phone GPS) and have pit-to-driver communication without having an attached Mk2, Mk3, or Podium device?

thanks!

Hi - thanks for joining!

Not currently. Phone / Tablet GPS is too low quality to do lap timing; the information would be unreliable.

We may make it available without lap timing for in-car pit-to-car messaging and live race stats, now that this feature is coming online.

Hi Brent,

Thanks for writing back to me personally!

Ok, this may be a naive question, but how to other lap timers like Harry's and RaceChrono and such work? I can see that most of them allow for, but do not require, an external bluetooth GPS.

Thanks again.

With internal GPS, they work- poorly. It's a common sight to see screenshots of bad GPS traces with these lap timers. We prefer to maintain high quality data for the best user experience - and with the $299 entry point for RaceCapture, you have excellent GPS quality, a very high quality IMU (vs a typical phone's IMU) and 100 CAN / OBDII channels. We feel that's a great deal, and about the cost of 1-2 race tires.
