IMHO, after spending upwards of £100 on bits and goodness know what in time and effort, the best solution is one that works reliably.
I have shown (reported above) that shielded twin core is necessary for some applications and hence I would use it always in future.
A quick look at the Maplins site has shown that shielded twisted pair is available in cut lengths for less than £2 per metre - pretty cost-effective I'd say...

Good point! Although I'm not actually using the Maplin's stuff myself (even though it does look fine to me) since I got some with the EDIS unit from the American supplier - I was just pointing out a cheap source.
