To work with the EDIS

Post by brentp »

To work with the EDIS module, the flywheel must have the equivalent of the 36-1 pattern. it might be possible to modify your flywheel to have the correct pattern, by drilling additional holes, or having the existing holes closed up by welding.

Could you point us to a picture of this flywheel?

CVH flywheel

Post by varnish5000 »

Hello,

I have a ford cvh fitted with twin carbs (will be when its finished).

It has a flywheel from a late model cvh which used electronic ignition (I've been told it's DIS not EDIS not sure of this though).

The flywheel has holes in the back (more like indentations)in an almost complete circle, with one hole missing.

The block has a mounting place with a vr sensor, that points at these holes on the flywheel.

The sensor is mounted 90 degrees before TDC.

I guess this is the equlivent of a trigger wheel with a tooth missing. There is something like 8 or 10 of these holes on the back of the flywheel (I can't be sure because I dont have it to hand, but its not anything like 36).

What I would like to know is;

Can I use MegaJolt to run the ignition but use the flywheel instead of a toothed trigger wheel?

*EDIT*: Picture will be added over the weekend.

Brent, this info might help:

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.wrenchead.ca/HTML%20Presenta ... 063.htm</a>

Just press forward button, single >, not double >>. I think I stumbeled on mother load there. If you go backward there is even more useful info.

Is this how your DIS module looks like, varnish?

No ignition parts

Post by varnish5000 »

I don't actually have any of the ignition system apart from the coil pack.

The engine was bought from a scraped car to be rebuilt for more power.
I bought the engine with no loom or ignition parts (I got the VR sensor but not the cable that goes with it).

The bloke I bought it off even said;
"do you want any thing else from the car"?
Maybe next time I'll know what I'm doing.

That's very good stuff.

That's very good stuff. thanks for finding that.

I found it interesting that the EDIS module has a 'bleed-down', or graceful shutdown feature if it looses signal from the sensor.

As promised photos of flywheel.

Don't know how to post pics so links will have to do.

Looks like I've been a complete retard.

The pattern on the back of the flywheel is 36-1, so this should work fine with the MJLJ.

Yes, I agree. That pattern

Yes, I agree. That pattern should work fine. The 'rib' section of the pattern would be the equivalent of a trigger wheel tooth.

You're fortunate! you'll have a very clean and unobtrusive installation.

Thanks Brent.
I'm at uni at the mo,(which is why I've wasted your time)
I can only see whats on with the flywheel etc when I'm at home'
Looks like I'll be getin' a MJLJ with a TPS (twin carbs).
The excahnge rate is pretty good at the mo as well.(I'm in the U.K)
Thanks for your time

Varnish, Hi.

Im also a student with a CVH looking to go down the MJ route, do you know if all CVH flywheels are as per yours. I might have to have a look at that as an option.

I don't think so.

I've just taken my engine in to be machined (at last, how long has that taken me?), and the bloke said he had not seen one with the trigger wheel on the back before.

Its a late CVH from an escort, carb with mapped ignition.

Fair enough.
- Ive not had time to crawl under mine a check yet, but it doesnt make you wonder where yours came from!
- I know the 1.8l seirra apprently had a suitable wheel on the front pulley, so may get one of those if i can.

The flywheel pictured above is an EFI flywheel.
You should find them on the likes of the Mk3 CVH EFi Fiesta.
Carb'd CVH engines won't have them. Certainly the likes of the Mk2 Fiesta.

You 'could' also use the one from the 1.6 or 1.8 Zetec. As these also have the Crank Position sensor holes in the back of the flywheel.
The EFI flywheel is preferable though as it's about 2kg's lighter than the Zetec flywheel. :D

I have one fitted to my 1.8 Zetec powered Mk2 Fiesta.
It's currently running Ford ESC, but will shortly be running Megajolt. :)

Jason.
