Newbie needs help with SS1 Zetec conversion!!

Post by pollymog »

Hi there I hope someone can help me with this.

In my garage I have a Reliant Scimitar SS1. This is currently powered by a 1600cc Ford CVH engine mated to a Type 9 gearbox, with a Sierra diff bringing up the rear. I've gone out & bought (very cheaply) a 2 litre silvertop Zetec engine from an R reg Mondeo Ghia as I've been reliably informed that this engine will fit in the SS1 without too many problems. Unfortunately the 2 litre injection setup won't fit in the SS1 as there's just no room for it, with this in mind I've bought an inlet manifold from a Ginetta G20 (which was fitted with an 1800 Zetec), this came with wiring loom, coil pack & injectors & seemed like too good an opportunity to miss considering the price it was advertised at. To be honest I'm still not sure it'll fit as the brake sevo may get in the way, in which case it'll be back to plan A & I'll try to find 130ps inlet manifold from a mk5 Escort (the one that goes over the top of the engine - if anyone has one that's surplus to requirements please let me know) or I may try plan B & keep the Ginetta inlet manifold & I'll try to fit a remote brake servo. There's plenty of space in the SS1 engine bay as long as you don't need a spare wheel as this is normally stored between the engine & radiator.

I'd very much like to use the Ginetta inlet manifold though so my question is: will I need a Megajolt ecu or a Megasquirt ecu to run a fuel injection system? I'm unsure whether the Megajolt ecu is purely for carbs which I don't have the funds to buy (well not new ones anyway).

Also I could do with a bit of advice regarding the fuel pump (which one do I get?) & whether I need a fuel pressure regulator or not?

I've had the chassis repaired (new sills & various other bits & bobs), rebuilt & reconditioned the front suspension & I've also fitted uprated front brakes so the next thing to do is to get cracking with the engine swap. I have the engine, the neccesary flywheel/clutch asembly & the inlet manifold. I just need to know the whether it's the Megajolt or Megasquirt & which fuel pump etc??

Many thanks & I hope someone can help :)

Hi Pollymog

Megajolt is primarily for engines with carburettors. It doesn't have any fuel control at all and is only used for the ignition timing on engines. It can be used with some OEM ecu's such as landrovers in order to get away from distributor ignition setups.

Megasuirt can control both ignition and injection fuelling.

As for fuel pressure, it mostly depends on what the calculated amount fuelling is required. The megasquirt forum can help you with this.
