That happened to me with my 72 Datsun 1200 (Corolla arch-rival :-) ) even had little faint backfire occasionally

I had the timing wheel mis-positioned. While at TDC, the sensor should be pointed at the tooth which is n teeth counter-clockwise from the missing tooth.

I need to have a wheel with a big enough ID to open up to 5.5", this is after removing the trigger from its mount. Does anyone know which American Ford has a big enough wheel? The largest Ford trigger wheel I could find is the USA Escort. The UK wheels, and the other USA wheels are all smaller...

Yes, most four-cylinders are 1-3-4-2.

Good question. The Ford coil has them marked. Connect the coil tower #1 to cylinder #1, 2 to 2, 3 to 3, 4 to 4. Worked fine on my Nissan engine.
