This is a pretty well modified engine, so it will want a curve a little bit different from a stock L18 or L20B Datsun engine. Attached is a MJLJ ignition map for a stock 1974 Datsun 620 with L18 engine, using these factory specs from the 1974 factory service manual: Vacuum: 0/150mmHG (5.91 inHG) to ...

Yes, anyone have ideas on how to do this? I tried to make a gauge but don't really know what I'm doing. I figured out how to get the RPM signal, but not how to display a round gauge style. I have a nice lightweight older Pocket PC that is powered by USB, about the same size as my tachometer spot in ...

Well it's been almost two years and it's still running perfectly. Still a rock-solid idle, with no intermittent variations in idle speed. Last summer my idle speed dropped a bit, but still rock-solid. Ater a tune-up, not touching the timing or changing the plugs (just inspected the plugs which looke...

Ignition Map Spreadsheet

I didn't see anything like this on the site, so hopefully it will be useful. Enter your parameters like max centrifugal advance & RPM, and it will create the map and save an MJLJ file. It is in Microsoft Excel 2000 format. It is for naturally-aspirated engines and MAP sensor (vacuum advance). I'...

Thanks for your comments. I did some more work on it, it runs a bit better.
I also found I had converted from mmHg to KPa incorrectly.
I have updated the Map file. New one is 712 bytes.

Thanks, I'm pleased with how easy it was to do. Yes, keying the trigger wheel would help align the timing. On the other hand, I don't think it is going to shift. There is no load on the wheel except its own inertia and I used a torque wrench to tighten the bolt to factory specification. Time will te...

I think you are right, I'm still learning... I knew about "distributor degrees" being 1/2 of crankshaft degrees, but failed to notice it was quoted in "distributor RPM" and not crankshaft RPM. No wonder I had to change initial timing more than expected. For the max I think 32 deg...

The PRINT SCREEN key -- in Windows -- copies the screen to the clipboard. Then you can go to Paint or Word or some other programs and "Paste" it. Then print it out. If you get the figures into Excel, highlight the table and then click the Chart button. Grab a buddy that is already familiar...

When I first made this map, I didn't realize the MJLJ would smoothly adjust the timing between the map-points. I figured it would 'step' at each RPM level. But it runs too smooth for that to be happening! Also note that the Factory vacuum advance curve was designed for emissions control. So probably...

Here are the Nissan factory ignition curves. http://datsun1200.com/modules/myalbum/photos/16107.jpg I put the MJLJ map right on the high side of the factory tolerance for mechanical. The vacuum advance was tricky to map. My map is in the Library here: http://www.autosportlabs.org/viewtopic.php?p=8376

Ford's always had some nice, reliable electronic ignition designs, starting with their 1973 models. What is so great about the EDIS system is that it is crank trigger, and can run standalone (not needing the engine computer). So Brent's low-cost controller allows a nice package price. * New parts av...

I care -- it cost me $33 to fill up the tank today! Yes, for sure. You need vacuum advance for best fuel economy. In general, more advance for more fuel economy. Just don't let the engine ping/pink/rattle/detonate. I would think a well sorted distributor will give as good of fuel economy as MJLJ. Bu...

Let's hope it is something simple. The COM ports give a lot of trouble, and if your laptop crashed, the port may have been turned off or changed on the laptop. I would start with the troubleshooting here: http://www.autosportlabs.net/Troubleshooting_the_MegaJolt_Lite_Jr. . See the first section abou...
