FINALLY!!! But I had to change the instrument to a programmable multi input gauge. Now it works perfectly from the 'tacho out' source....as expected.

Hi, May I throw in my twopennyworth? I'm sorry if I'm teaching the sucking of eggs, but here goes...It occurs to me that the symptoms are those of a connection to a 'vacuum' pick up placed as a cruise advance system. There are many 'economy' carbs that have a take off just above the leading (rising)...

Thanks, Guys, very user friendly!! Still struggling to get the Tacho to work. It's a VDO unit and has defied all pleading and soft(ish) hammerblows to date. I've installed the little diode circuit, now I'll try removing bits of it again...

Brent, Thanks for your welcome. The Westfield is up and running, the ignition is superbly accurate. We used a light steel flywheel from BURTON ENGINES here in UK.
